Bonded warehouse integration: what to ask vendors

Bonded storage is one of the quieter pieces of fine wine infrastructure, and one of the least discussed in most wine technology content. That is a gap, because getting it wrong is expensive and getting it right is mostly a matter of asking the right questions before you commit to a system.

A bonded warehouse lets wine be stored and traded without VAT being triggered until the bottle actually leaves bond, which matters enormously for margin on high value stock sitting in inventory. Does it handle VAT calculation correctly at the point a bottle leaves bond, accounting for the country it is shipping to, or does that get handled outside the system in a spreadsheet?

If you work with more than one warehouse, can the system show a unified view across locations, or does each warehouse relationship live in its own silo?

The honest answer from most general inventory or ecommerce platforms to most of these questions is no, because bonded warehouse workflows are a wine and spirits specific requirement that generic retail software was never asked to handle. It is a narrow question, but it is exactly the kind of narrow question that separates software built for wine from software adapted for it.
